The Carolina Hiring Playbook is a tool created to help HR representatives, hiring managers and other members of the Carolina community navigate our improved hiring process for permanent, non-faculty positions (SHRA and EHRA non-faculty). The Playbook will continue to be updated to reflect policy changes and incorporate further improvements.

The University strives to create a welcoming and safe environment for all individuals. Consistent with this goal, the University will not employ individuals or appoint unpaid affiliates with prior criminal convictions or driving records (when applicable) who are determined to pose an unacceptable safety risk to the University or its employees, students and visitors. The University’s background check process is intended to identify the presence of any such circumstances and to provide a basis for making good faith and sound determinations as to whether such matters rise to the level barring appointment.

The University is committed to ensuring non-discrimination in employment such that employment opportunities and decisions are based on the skill and ability of the individual. In furtherance of this commitment and in compliance with applicable laws, the Office of Human Resources is responsible for monitoring search and recruitment efforts at the University.

Consistent with this principle and applicable laws, the University does not discriminate with respect to employment terms and conditions on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, veterans’ status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This policy ensures that only relevant factors are considered and that equitable and consistent standards are applied to all personnel actions. More information and a copy of the University’s SHRA Equal Opportunity Plans are available on the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office website.

The diversity of our staff brings strength to the University. Our focus on diversity with each search, gives us the opportunity to hire, attract and retain the talented staff we want and need to continue our legacy of excellence. An online training module for Supervisors and Search Committees is available and provides valuable information, helpful advice and proven techniques to enable our search committees to run more efficiently. This Conducting a Fair and Diverse Search training is encouraged for SHRA recruitment.

All hiring for EHRA non-faculty employees should be done through the use of a search committee that works closely with the department’s Talent Acquisition Partner. The committee should receive a charge setting forth the expectations for the position and the search committee’s role in helping fill the position. Typically, for Faculty searches, the Dean appoints the search committee and gives the charge. Check with your school for the internal guidelines for faculty searches.
